Microsoft Just Made Paying Monthly More Expensive — Here’s What Changed on October 1

3 min read
Infographic on Microsoft 365 licensing price changes effective October 1, showing affected products and a 5% cost of capital uplift

If your business runs Windows Server, SQL Server, or System Center through a Cloud Solution Provider agreement and pays monthly, your next renewal costs more than it used to — not because the product got more expensive, but because the bill itself did.

What Actually Changed

Starting October 1, 2026, Microsoft is applying a 5% "cost of capital" uplift to eligible annual-term CSP software subscriptions that are billed monthly. This covers products like Windows Server, SQL Server, Client Access Licenses (CALs), and System Center — the infrastructure licensing many UAE businesses run through a Microsoft partner rather than buying outright.

The uplift isn't applied retroactively. Existing subscriptions only see it at their first renewal on or after October 1. If your renewal date is in December, you have until then before the new pricing kicks in.

What's Not Affected

Two things are untouched by this change: subscriptions billed annually upfront, and genuine month-to-month subscriptions with no annual commitment behind them. The uplift specifically targets the combination of an annual commitment paid out over twelve monthly instalments — not monthly billing itself, and not the annual commitment itself.

This also isn't the same as the broader Microsoft 365 price increase that took effect earlier in 2026. That was a separate, product-level price change. This one is purely about how you're billed for infrastructure licensing you've already committed to for a year.

Why Microsoft Is Doing This

Microsoft's own framing is straightforward: collecting an annual commitment across twelve monthly payments costs Microsoft more than collecting it once upfront, and the 5% uplift prices in that working-capital cost. In effect, paying monthly has quietly become a financing arrangement with a financing charge attached to it.

In practice, a business paying roughly AED 3,000/month for Windows Server and SQL Server CALs under an annual-term, monthly-billed CSP agreement would see that rise to around AED 3,150/month at renewal — a change that’s easy to miss on an invoice if nobody’s specifically looking for it.

What UAE Businesses Should Actually Do

A few concrete steps, in order of how much they matter:

  • Check your billing structure, not just your products. The uplift depends on whether you're on an annual-term-but-monthly-billed plan specifically — not on which Microsoft products you use. Two businesses with identical licensing can be affected differently depending purely on how the agreement is billed.

  • Know your renewal date. The uplift only applies at the first renewal on or after October 1, 2026. There's no urgency if your renewal is months away, but it's worth having on the radar rather than discovering it on an invoice.

  • Consider switching to annual upfront billing. If cash flow allows it, paying annually avoids the uplift entirely and is often the simplest fix — effectively trading a financing cost for a single payment.

  • Get your specific SKUs checked. "Eligible annual-term CSP subscriptions billed monthly" is a specific category, not every Microsoft product. The only way to know exactly what’s affected in your agreement is to have someone go through it line by line.

The Bigger Pattern

This is a small change on its own, but it's part of a wider pattern this year of Microsoft adjusting pricing in ways that reward specific billing and licensing choices rather than applying flat increases everywhere. Businesses that treat their Microsoft agreement as something to review once a year tend to catch these changes at renewal. Businesses that don't tend to find out from an invoice that's already gone up.

Not sure whether your CSP agreement is affected, or want a second pair of eyes on your renewal before it lands? CODE3 can review your current Microsoft Licensing and billing structure and tell you exactly where this does and doesn’t apply.
