Sophos Firewalls: A Buyer's Guide for UAE Businesses

Picking a firewall by price, or by whichever model a reseller happens to have in stock, is how businesses end up in one of two bad spots: overpaying for enterprise-grade hardware a 20-person office will never fully use, or underpaying for a box that chokes the moment real VPN and inspection load actually hits it. Sophos alone ships more than a dozen firewall models across three tiers, and the right one depends on more than headcount.
XG or XGS? The Model Number You're Searching For Might Already Be Retired
If you've been researching Sophos XG 210, XG 135 or any of the older XG-series model numbers, it's worth knowing upfront: XG was Sophos's previous generation. The current lineup is the XGS series - the direct successor, running on newer hardware. Plenty of businesses in Dubai are still running XG appliances today, and Sophos continues to support and license them, so there's nothing wrong with keeping one running until it's genuinely due for replacement. But if you're buying new, XGS is what you actually want, whatever model number you first searched for.
Matching the Firewall to Your Business, Not the Other Way Around
Sophos splits the XGS range into three practical tiers, and most of the sizing decision comes down to which one actually fits your environment:
- Desktop models (the XGS 87 through 138 range) - small offices, branch locations and businesses with a modest number of users and a handful of VPN connections.
- Mid-range appliances (the XGS 2100 to 3300 range) - growing businesses with more concurrent users, heavier VPN and remote-access demand, or several departments pushing more traffic through inspection at once.
- Higher-end and rack-mounted models - larger sites, data centers, or businesses running significant SSL inspection, sandboxing and intrusion prevention simultaneously, where sustained throughput under full security load matters more than the peak number on a spec sheet.
What the Spec Sheet Doesn't Tell You
The throughput figure on a Sophos datasheet is usually measured with security features turned down or off. Turn on full protection - deep packet inspection, IPS, sandboxing, web filtering - and real-world throughput drops, sometimes significantly. This is the single most common sizing mistake: buying to the headline number instead of to what the box can actually sustain once every protection layer is switched on. The right question isn't "how many users do we have" - it's "how much inspected traffic will this firewall actually carry once everything is turned on, and does it have headroom to grow." A Security Assessment of your current traffic and risk profile is the fastest way to answer that honestly, before you commit to a model.
Already Running an Older Sophos Firewall?
CODE3 supports existing Sophos deployments we didn't originally install, including firewall configuration changes and default-access recovery on older XG units, with licence renewals handled as part of an IT AMC contract so nothing lapses unnoticed. When a firewall is genuinely due for replacement, we size and migrate you to the right XGS model for your business - we don't just sell whatever's sitting in stock.
Whether you're sizing a firewall for the first time or replacing an XG appliance nearing end of support, our Sophos Partner team can walk through the right XGS model for your business, backed by Next-Gen Firewall deployment and ongoing Managed Security Services. Get in touch for a quote.
