WHAT'S COVERED

The Physical Connectivity Layer of Your Data Center

The cabling infrastructure can contain both copper and fiber optic media depending on the application, distance, bandwidth, equipment and architecture.

Servers & Network Switches
The core compute and connectivity layer.
Storage Systems
Where data actually lives.
Routers & Firewalls
The boundary of the network.
Patch Panels & Fiber Distribution Panels
Structured termination points.
Racks & Distribution Areas
The physical organization of the facility.
Network Rooms
Dedicated telecommunications spaces.
External Connectivity Points
Where the data center meets the outside world.

ISO/IEC 11801-5 specifically defines generic cabling within and to computer-room spaces in data-center premises.

WHY IT MATTERS

Data Center Copper vs Fiber Optic Cabling

TIA-942-C recognizes balanced twisted-pair cabling as one of the data-center cabling media options and includes requirements covering data-center cabling systems and installation.

Typical Provider

Keeping different cable types organized.
Rack Accessibility
Maintenance without disturbing the whole rack.

TIA-942 includes data-center cabling pathways and installation requirements among its infrastructure provisions.

TOPOLOGY & DISTRIBUTION AREAS

MDA, IDA, HDA & EDA Cabling

The cabling design should correspond with the equipment distribution and intended network topology rather than being treated as an isolated installation. TIA-942-C specifically addresses data-center telecommunications spaces and related topologies.

Main Distribution Area (MDA)

A central point for major network and telecommunications connections.

Intermediate Distribution Area (IDA)

Additional distribution between the main area and downstream infrastructure.

Horizontal Distribution Area (HDA)

Connectivity toward equipment areas and downstream network connections.

Equipment Distribution Area (EDA)

Contains equipment such as servers, storage systems and network devices.

WHAT'S COVERED

Build Physical Connectivity With Resilience in Mind

The level of redundancy should be determined by the required availability, network architecture, facility design and business requirements.

Dual Network Connections
More than one path to critical systems.
Separate Cable Pathways
Avoiding a single point of physical failure.
Redundant Switches
Active equipment with a backup.
Multiple Distribution Paths
Resilience built into the topology.
Diverse Fiber Routes
Physically separated backbone connectivity.
Dual Uplinks
Redundancy at the connection level.

TIA-942-C includes data-center redundancy as part of its telecommunications infrastructure considerations.

INTERCONNECT & HYBRID

Connect Separate Locations and Hybrid Environments

Cloud adoption does not eliminate the need for physical network infrastructure.

Data Center Interconnect

Physical connectivity between data centers, offices, buildings or campus locations, often using fiber optic infrastructure for longer-distance and higher-bandwidth links.

Cloud & Hybrid Environments

Data center connectivity for on-premises servers, cloud connectivity, firewalls, routers, VPN gateways, network switches, storage and backup infrastructure.

WHAT'S COVERED

Structured Connectivity for Storage and Growing Networks

Data center cabling should be designed with current requirements and reasonable future expansion in mind.

Network-Attached Storage
File-based storage connectivity.
Storage Area Networks
Block-based storage infrastructure.
Fiber Channel Environments
Dedicated high-performance storage networking.
Backup & Replication Networks
Connectivity supporting data protection.
More Switch Ports & Higher Bandwidth
The direction most environments are heading.
Increased Fiber Counts & Port Density
Planning for growth, not just today.

CONTINUITY & SECURITY

Support Business Continuity and Physical Security

Cabling alone does not create business continuity or security — it is one component of a broader architecture.

Business Continuity

Redundant connections, diverse pathways, separate network routes and documented physical connections contribute to resilience alongside the broader power, cooling, network, security, backup and disaster recovery architecture.

Physical Security

Data center cabling can also support connected CCTV, access control, biometric systems, intercoms and environmental monitoring. TIA-942-C includes physical security among its broader data-center infrastructure considerations.
