RTO & RPO

RTO & RPO: The Foundation of Disaster Recovery

RTO and RPO should be defined for individual workloads based on business impact, recovery requirements and cost.

Recovery Time Objective (RTO)

Defines the maximum acceptable time required to restore a system or service after a disruption. A business-critical application may require a shorter recovery window than a non-critical internal application.

Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

Defines how much recent data the business can accept losing after an incident. A 30-minute RPO means the recovery strategy should aim to limit data loss to that defined window.

WHY IT MATTERS

RPO vs RTO in Disaster Recovery

Different applications can have very different RPO and RTO requirements — a critical database and an archive file share should rarely share the same targets.

Typical Provider

  • Recovery Point Objective
  • Measures acceptable data loss
  • "How much data can we afford to lose?"
  • Applies to backup/recovery frequency
  • Example: 15 minutes

CODE3 360° AMC

  • Recovery Time Objective
  • Measures acceptable downtime
  • "How quickly must we recover?"
  • Applies to recovery process & infrastructure
  • Example: 2 hours
ASSESSMENT

Disaster Recovery Assessment

Before implementing a DR solution, CODE3 can assess your current environment.

Infrastructure

Review servers, storage, virtualization, networking and supporting infrastructure.

Applications

Identify business-critical applications and their dependencies.

Data

Determine which datasets require recovery and the acceptable recovery point.

Dependencies

Map relationships between applications, databases, servers, networks and authentication services.

Existing Backup

Review available backup copies and their suitability for recovery.

Recovery Infrastructure

Determine whether recovery will use another site, cloud infrastructure, standby systems or another appropriate architecture.

Security

Consider access control, backup protection and security requirements within the recovery environment.

Testing

Determine how recovery will be tested and validated.

DR TYPES

Disaster Recovery Types

Different DR architectures suit different infrastructure, budgets and recovery requirements.

Cloud Disaster Recovery

Production workloads are replicated to and protected in cloud infrastructure, so recovery does not depend on a second physical site.

On-Premises Disaster Recovery

Secondary infrastructure is maintained at another physical location, giving the organization direct control over the recovery environment.

Hybrid Disaster Recovery

A combination of on-premises and cloud recovery, often used when some workloads must remain on-site while others recover to the cloud.

Site-to-Site Disaster Recovery

Workloads fail over from a primary site to a designated secondary site, typically using replication between the two locations.

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS)

A cloud-hosted recovery environment is managed as a service, reducing the infrastructure the organization needs to own and maintain directly.

DR STRATEGIES

Disaster Recovery Strategies

AWS describes cloud DR approaches ranging from backup-and-restore through pilot light and warm standby to multi-site active/active architectures, with increasing complexity and cost as recovery requirements become more demanding. The appropriate strategy should be selected according to business requirements rather than assuming the most complex architecture is always necessary.

Backup & Restore

Data and workloads are restored from protected backup copies after an incident — appropriate where recovery time requirements allow restoration to take place after the event.

Pilot Light

A minimal recovery environment is maintained and expanded when disaster recovery is activated.

Warm Standby

A partially operational recovery environment is maintained so workloads can be restored or scaled more quickly.

Active-Passive

A secondary environment is maintained for recovery while the primary environment handles normal operations.

Active-Active

Multiple environments actively serve workloads, allowing traffic to continue through another environment if one becomes unavailable.

RECOVERY BY WORKLOAD

Server, Virtual Machine, Application & Database Disaster Recovery

The objective is to recover the right workloads in the right sequence rather than treating every system as an isolated recovery.

Server Disaster Recovery

Critical servers can require recovery planning beyond ordinary backup, including workload dependencies, recovery sequence, backup or replication method and target infrastructure.

Common applications:
  • Physical, virtual, file & application servers
  • Domain services & infrastructure services
Virtual Machine Disaster Recovery

Virtualized environments often contain multiple interdependent workloads, so recovery order matters as much as the recovery method itself.

Common applications:
  • VMware & Hyper-V environments
  • Virtual networks, storage & replication
Application Disaster Recovery

Applications rarely operate independently — a recovery plan should consider dependencies, DNS, authentication and startup order.

Common applications:
  • Application servers, databases & authentication
  • APIs, licensing & configuration
Database Disaster Recovery

Databases often require specific recovery procedures that should be tested rather than assumed to work because backups exist.

Common applications:
  • Database type, criticality & replication
  • RPO/RTO, recovery location & validation
WHAT'S COVERED

Cloud Disaster Recovery

Cloud platforms can provide different options for disaster recovery depending on the workload. Avoid designing the DR strategy around the technology first — start with business-critical workloads and their recovery requirements.

Microsoft Azure
Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup and cross-region recovery capabilities.
Amazon Web Services
AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery, multi-region architectures and recovery automation.
Hybrid Cloud
Recovery spanning on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
On-Premises Infrastructure
Physical and virtualized environments.
Multi-Site Environments
Recovery across more than one location or region.

Azure supports different recovery capabilities including secondary environments, replication and failover options depending on the service and architecture. AWS similarly provides multiple DR approaches and recommends defining recovery objectives, implementing an appropriate strategy and testing the implementation.

WHAT'S COVERED

Disaster Recovery for Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 includes platform-level resilience and recovery capabilities, but organizations may still need to define their own data protection, continuity and recovery requirements.

Exchange Online
Email and mailbox data.
SharePoint & OneDrive
Document libraries and file storage.
Microsoft Teams
Collaboration and chat data.
Microsoft 365 Identities
User accounts and access.
Business-Critical Documents
Files the organization cannot afford to lose.
User Access & Data Protection
Ensuring people can get back to work.
WHAT'S COVERED

Disaster Recovery for Ransomware

Ransomware recovery requires more than keeping ordinary backups. A DR strategy should be designed alongside cybersecurity controls because a security incident can affect both production systems and recovery infrastructure.

Protected Backup Copies
Copies attackers cannot easily reach.
Restricted Administrative Access & MFA
Limiting who can alter recovery infrastructure.
Encryption
Protecting recovery data itself.
Immutable Recovery Points
Recovery points that cannot be altered or deleted, where supported.
Recovery Isolation
Keeping recovery infrastructure separate from production.
Incident Response Procedures
Coordinating recovery with the security response.
Clean Recovery Environments
Restoring into an environment confirmed free of the original threat.
WHAT'S COVERED

Failover & Failback

Microsoft's DR guidance explicitly identifies failover and failback as important parts of recovery planning. Failover moves production to the DR environment; failback returns it to the restored primary infrastructure.

Planned Failover
A controlled, scheduled transition used for testing or planned maintenance.
Emergency Failover
An unplanned transition triggered by an actual incident, executed under time pressure.
Application Dependencies
Confirming dependent services start in the correct order in the recovery environment.
DNS & Network Changes
Redirecting traffic so users and systems reach the recovery environment.
Data Synchronization
Ensuring the recovery environment has the data it needs before and after failover.
Validation
Confirming applications, connectivity and access actually work post-failover.
Failback & Returning to Primary Infrastructure
Restoring the primary environment and moving workloads back once the original issue is resolved.

A documented failback process reduces the risk of creating additional disruption during recovery.

WHAT'S COVERED

Disaster Recovery Testing, Runbooks & Monitoring

A DR plan should not remain on paper. AWS recommends testing disaster recovery implementations to validate that they can meet defined objectives, while Microsoft similarly emphasizes documented and testable DR plans.

Recovery Procedures & Sequence
Confirming the plan runs in the right order.
Backup Integrity & Replication
Verifying the underlying data is actually recoverable.
Application & Network Validation
Confirming systems actually come back online correctly.
User Access
Confirming people can reach recovered systems.
Recovery Timing & Documentation
Measuring against RTO and keeping records current.
Roles & Responsibilities
Confirming who does what during a recovery event.
Activation Criteria & Communication
Defining when DR is triggered and who is told.
Ongoing Monitoring & Alerts
Tracking replication, backup status and recovery readiness continuously.
Post-Recovery Review
Learning from each test or real event.

A practical runbook covers incident identification, DR activation criteria, authorized decision-makers, recovery sequence, failover actions, validation steps and failback procedure — customized to the environment rather than copied from a generic template.

SCALED TO YOUR BUSINESS

Disaster Recovery for Hybrid, Growing & Enterprise Environments

A DR strategy should account for dependencies between environments — for example, Users → Identity → Network → Application → Database → Storage. If one dependency is unavailable, recovering only the application server may not restore the business service.

Hybrid IT Environments

Many businesses operate across on-premises, cloud, Microsoft 365 and virtual infrastructure. CODE3 can help map these relationships and establish recovery priorities.

Growing Businesses

Smaller businesses do not necessarily need a complex multi-region architecture. The right strategy depends on critical applications, business impact, budget and acceptable downtime — without over-engineering the environment.

Enterprise Environments

Larger organizations may require structured recovery planning across multiple offices, data centers, cloud platforms, databases and regulatory requirements, with different recovery priorities per workload.
