NETWORK ARCHITECTURE

Fiber Network Architecture

A typical enterprise network uses fiber as the backbone between core and distribution infrastructure, with copper cabling carrying the final connection to end devices. The actual architecture depends on the building, network design, distances and required connectivity.

Core & Backbone
Core Network

Core switches and routers form the center of the network, handling traffic between the backbone, distribution layers and external connectivity.

Fiber Backbone

High-capacity fiber links connect the core network to distribution points across floors, buildings or campus locations.

Fiber carries traffic to the core
Distribution
MDF / Main Network Room

The main distribution frame is where backbone fiber terminates and connects into the wider distribution layer.

Fiber Distribution

Distribution panels and fiber links extend connectivity out to floor-level or zone-level network rooms.

IDF / Floor Network Rack

Intermediate distribution frames on each floor or zone bring fiber connectivity closer to end users and devices.

Handed off to the access layer
Access
Network Switch

Access switches convert the fiber-fed distribution layer into ports for connecting local devices.

Cat6 / Cat6A & User Devices

Copper cabling carries the final short-distance connection from the switch to workstations, phones and other endpoints.

A properly planned fiber backbone can provide the physical foundation for future network growth.

WHY FIBER

Why Businesses Use Fiber Optic Cabling

High-Capacity Connectivity

Fiber provides a strong foundation for high-bandwidth network infrastructure.

Longer-Distance Links

Fiber is commonly used for connections that extend beyond the practical limits of typical copper Ethernet deployments.

Resistance to Electromagnetic Interference

Because fiber transmits data optically rather than electrically, it is highly resistant to electromagnetic interference.

Network Backbone Infrastructure

Fiber can connect core network environments, distribution points, buildings and data-center infrastructure.

Scalable Infrastructure

A properly designed fiber backbone can provide a foundation for future network expansion.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FIBER

Single-Mode vs Multimode Fiber

Choosing the correct fiber type is one of the most important parts of fiber network design.

Single-Mode Fiber
Best for Longer Distances

Single-mode fiber is commonly selected for longer-distance optical links. The appropriate fiber and optics depend on the actual distance and network equipment.

Common applications:
  • Building-to-building connectivity
  • Campus backbones
  • Data-center connectivity
Multimode Fiber
Best for Shorter Distances

Multimode fiber is commonly used for shorter-distance high-speed connectivity within buildings and selected data-center environments. Final selection should be based on distance, required speed, optical equipment and network architecture.

Common applications:
  • Data-center connections
  • Building backbones
  • Server-room infrastructure

CODE3 can assess the project requirements and help determine the appropriate fiber type rather than selecting a cable specification without considering the wider network design.

WHAT'S COVERED

Fiber Types: OS2, OM3, OM4 & OM5

Fiber specifications vary according to the required application. Each has different characteristics and application considerations — CODE3 can help determine the appropriate type for your project.

OS2People

Single-Mode Backbone

The standard single-mode fiber specification, used for longer-distance backbone links — building-to-building, campus and long-haul network connections.

OM3People

Data-Center Standard

A laser-optimized multimode fiber, typically identified by an aqua-colored jacket, commonly used for data-center and building-backbone links.

OM4People

Higher-Bandwidth Multimode

Improves on OM3's bandwidth for higher-speed connections over longer multimode distances — one of the most common data-center fiber choices.

OM5People

Wideband / SWDM-Ready

A newer wideband multimode standard supporting short-wavelength division multiplexing, used in select higher-density data-center environments.

WHAT'S COVERED

Data Center Fiber Cabling

Data centers require carefully planned physical connectivity. A data-center fiber design should also consider cable management, patching, labeling, testing and serviceability.

Core network connectivity
Fiber links between core switches and the wider data-center network keep the busiest, highest-bandwidth traffic moving without bottlenecks.
Rack-to-rack connections
Short, high-density fiber runs between racks support the server-to-server and storage traffic a modern data center depends on.
Network backbone links
Fiber forms the backbone between distribution points, so every rack and zone stays connected to the core.
High-density environments
Data centers pack a large number of connections into a small footprint, so cable management and pathway planning matter as much as the fiber itself.
Inter-rack connectivity
Structured fiber trunks and MPO connectors simplify adding or moving racks without re-running individual fiber strands each time.
Distribution infrastructure
Patch panels and distribution frames organize how backbone fiber connects out to individual racks and equipment.
Future network expansion
Planning spare fiber capacity and pathway space during installation avoids disruptive re-cabling as the data center grows.
FIBER SPLICING

Fiber Optic Splicing

Splicing connects two fiber sections together while maintaining the optical path.

Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing uses specialized equipment to join fiber ends. It is commonly used where a permanent, low-loss connection is required.

Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing aligns fiber ends using a mechanical method and may be suitable for selected applications or repairs.

The appropriate splicing method depends on the project and installation requirements.

WHAT'S COVERED

Fiber Termination, Patch Panels & Distribution

After fiber installation and splicing, the fiber must be properly terminated into the network infrastructure. A well-organized termination environment makes future troubleshooting and expansion easier.

Fiber patch panels
Patch panels give each fiber strand a fixed, labeled port, making it possible to reconfigure connections without touching the backbone cabling itself.
Distribution panels & units
Distribution units break backbone fiber out into individual connections for a floor, zone or rack.
Enclosures
Wall-mounted or rack-mounted enclosures protect splices and terminations while keeping them accessible for future work.
Pigtails & patch cords
Pre-terminated pigtails and patch cords connect spliced fiber to equipment without requiring termination on-site.
Connectors
The connector type (LC, SC, MPO and others) needs to match the equipment at both ends of the link.
Splice trays
Splice trays organize and protect individual fiber splices inside an enclosure or panel.
Fiber trays
Fiber trays manage slack cable and maintain the minimum bend radius fiber needs to avoid signal loss or damage.
Rack-mounted fiber management
Rack-mounted management keeps fiber routing organized and protected as it moves between panels and equipment.
Labeling
Clear labeling at every termination point is what makes a fiber installation serviceable years after it was installed.

The final termination approach depends on the fiber type, network equipment and project architecture.

FIBER TESTING

Fiber Optic Testing & OTDR Testing

Testing is an important part of professional fiber installation.

OTDR Testing

An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer can help identify characteristics and events along a fiber link, including potential faults, attenuation and splice-related issues.

Optical Power Testing

Optical power measurements can help verify the signal level across a fiber link.

Link Verification

Installed links should be checked before being placed into production. Where testing documentation is included in the project scope, results can be recorded for future troubleshooting and infrastructure management.
