ANPR vs. Manual Gate Logging: What Changes for UAE Facilities

ANPR vs. Manual Gate Logging: What Changes for UAE Facilities

A guard with a clipboard, writing down plates as cars roll through — most UAE facilities still run their vehicle access this way, and it works right up until someone asks "which vehicles were on site yesterday afternoon" and there’s no real answer. Here’s what actually changes when that gets automated.

What Manual Vehicle Logging Actually Costs You

There's no real record, just a log someone kept by hand. Illegible handwriting, skipped entries and no way to search it after the fact.

The gate depends on someone standing there. Every vehicle needs a guard to check it and manually open the barrier — a bottleneck at any entrance with real traffic.

Visitor and resident vehicles get treated the same way. No automatic distinction between an authorized plate and one that needs checking.

What Changes Once ANPR Is In

Vehicles are identified automatically as they approach, no guard required to read and log a plate.

Gates and barriers open on recognition for authorized vehicles, directly tied to the plate, not a person's judgment call.

Every entry and exit is recorded and searchable, instead of living in a paper log nobody wants to search through.

CCTV integration ties a vehicle record to actual footage of the event, not just a timestamp — see our CCTV guide for how the two systems work together.

Choosing the Right Camera Type for Your Site

Fixed cameras — permanently mounted at a specific entry or exit for continuous, unattended identification.

Mobile/portable cameras — vehicle-mounted or relocatable, for temporary deployments or sites where coverage needs change.

Multi-lane cameras — configured to cover several lanes at once for busier entrances.

Weatherproof/outdoor cameras — ruggedized for dust, rain, heat and direct sun — the default for most outdoor UAE installations.

What to Check Before You Switch

Lane count and traffic volume — a single-lane residential gate needs a very different setup than a multi-lane commercial entrance.

Your existing gate hardware — confirm the system can actually trigger your barrier, not just log a plate and stop there.

Night performance — if the site operates after dark, confirm the camera is rated for low-light recognition.

Visitor handling — decide whether visitor plates need pre-registration or get checked against a watchlist on arrival — our Access Control guide covers the credential side of the same problem.

ANPR Data and UAE Data Protection

Once a plate read is linked to a vehicle or driver record - for resident access, parking allocation, or reviewing an incident - that data falls under the same UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection that covers CCTV and access control logs. The practical implication is the same: secure storage, controlled access, and a clear retention policy - not an indefinite log of every plate that has ever passed through.

How CODE3 Implements ANPR

Deployment starts with a site assessment covering lane count, traffic patterns and existing gate/CCTV infrastructure, followed by camera selection, installation, and integration with barriers, access control or parking management as needed. Ongoing AMC and maintenance keep the system accurate as plates, vehicles and site conditions change.

Not sure how many cameras your entrance actually needs? CODE3 can size this to your real traffic, not a generic package.
